MBA – The Master of all Exams

MBA (Master’s of Business Administration) is the go-to degree of all most every Student/Professional who wants to pursue a career in the corporate world. MBA is that’s why the , cut-offsmost preferred Post-Graduation degree in India. To get into a well reputed MBA college is no walk in the park. Aspirants have to give entrance exams in which their Mental Aptitude, their aptitude of solving problems and their communication skills are judged after which they have to qualify unrealistically high cut-offs of their dream colleges and if they clcutoffsthen they are called for interviews in which their personalities and their knowledge about the subject is judged. Weightage of Interview and the Entrance Exam differs from Institution to Institution.

There are different entrance exams held for entry into various MBA colleges.  Most commonly given entrance exams is CAT (Common Admission Test). Most B-Schools in India accept CAT scores for admission. XAT (Xavier’s Admission Test), SNAP (Symbiosis National Aptitude Test), NMAT, TISS EXAM (Tata Institute of Social Sciences) and GMAT( Graduate Management Admission Test) follow CAT in the the list of most number of Applicants. India’s best management institutes (as per Ministry of Human Resource Development) take students take admissions through these gateway tests.


CAT is the most commonly given among these, which acts as a gateway for IIMs (Indian Institute of Management), MDI (Management Development Institute), FMS (Faculty of Management Studies). Apart from them CAT score is accepted by more than 500 B-Schools around India. It is conducted on rotational basis by IIMs and this year IIM Lucknow will be conducting the exam.  Registration process for CAT begins in September and continues till October. The exam is held in Early December and the results are declared in January. CAT is a computer based test. CAT questions are divided into three sections, Quantitative Aptitude, Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning. Duration of test is 180 minutes and there is also a time limit of 60 minutes for each section.


XAT follows CAT in terms of popularity of test. XAT score is accepted in Well Reputed Management Institutions like XLRI (Xavier School of Management), XIM (Xavier Institute of Management), XISS (Xavier Institute of Social Sciences), LIBA, SIBM (Pune), BIM (Trichy), GIM (Goa), etc. XAT is conducted by Xavier Association of Management Institutes (XAMI). The exam is held in the month of January. Duration of exam is 205 minutes, out of which 170 minutes are allotted to 78 questions of Verbal Ability and Decision Making and rest 35 minutes are allotted to questions of Essay and General Awareness. Registration process for the exam starts in September and the exam is usually held in the month of January.


SNAP is conducted by Symbiosis International University (SIU) and SNAP score is accepted by Institutions like SIBM (Symbiosis Institute of Business Management), SICSR, SIMC, SIIB, SCMHRD, SIMS, SITM, SCIT,  SIOM, SIHS,SIBM (Bengaluru), SSMC(Bengaluru), SSBF, SIBM (Hyderabad). {All the Institutions are part of Symbiosis Group}. SNAP Paper is of 120 minutes and questions are from Quantitative Reasoning (40 Questions), Verbal Ability (40 Questions), Logical Reasoning (40 Questions) and General Awareness (30 Questions). Registration process for the exam usually begins by August and the exam is held in Mid-December.


NMAT is conducted by Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC). NMAT scrores are accepted by NMIMS (Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies) (Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad), Alliance University (Bangalore), Amity University (Delhi NCR), and several other B-Schools. NMAT paper contains same sections as that of CAT but the no. of questions are 32,48, and 40 of Verbal Ability, Quantitative Skills and Logical Reasoning respectively. The exam is of 120 minutes. Registrations for exam begins in July and the exam can be given anytime between October and December.
